I wonder if there is a limitation on the numbers of sites in the master slave architecture ?

NO - there is no count and there is no limit of the number of the website that you can create.

After, the maximum number of sites might be depend on the server performance, memory, ....

When you expect more than 1,000 websites, it is recommended to use the JMS setting with "letter tree" and over 5,000 slave sites, create a specific "multisites user exit" to avoid generating and reading the JMS master index file that keep the list of all the slave site domain names.
