TOPIC: Change domains on the fly
#2276
Change domains on the fly 14 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
I have old sites with address like sub.domain.com, I want to replace them by Joomla.

My idea was to install Joomla on subdomains like sub1.domain.com then when the site is ready just change the address to sub.domain.com in 'site config/List of domain names' and redirect the subdomain sub to public_html/sub1.

However, it does not seem to work. Any idea on how to achieve this ?

Thanks,

Loïc

I confirm that I cannot change the url dynamically in the site management - is it a bug ?

There is no miracle solution.

You have to check the hosting server document root directory.
See if it correspond to you JMS slave site deploy directory.

Review the tutorial video 0
www.jms2win.com/tutorial#jms12x-0
that present the concept relative to the adminstration of a server and also the CP-04
www.jms2win.com/tutorial#jms12x-CP-04
that show how to configure a slave site with a deploy directory and the expected results in terms of symbolic links.

Configure a hosting server to redirect an URL to another one will not work because this modify the URL and therefore the URL is not correct.
You can NEVER use a hosting server redirection.

You said in another post that:

When you go live, you can just change the domain defined in the JMS slave site definition to use the real domain name.
Don't forget to also defined your hosting server to assign the domain with the new "document root" directory.

We also have customers that use JMS to have several versions of a same website.
They create several slave site and just have to switch the domain name when they are ready.

I tried to change the adress from domain.com/test5 to domain.com/test6 in site config but was unable to access the site at the later address ... - Do I have also to rename the folder ?

Your sample is false as you don't change only the domain but have changed the subdirectory /test5 and /test6.

This is not applicable as you can not reuse the same directory or you can create manually a symbolic to redirect test5 to test6.

ok so what do you advise ?

My existing domain sub1.domain.com is in the folder public_html/sub1

I want to replace those files by a Joomla slave, if I install it in the folder /sub1, it may conflict with the existing content so I install it in new folder /sub 2 and give it later the adress sub1.domain.com ? What will happen with the existing files (html files) ?

Another issue is with Cpanel - Cpanel automatically associates subdomains to subfolders of the same name - I am not sure it's good to make a redirect from sub1 to sub2 because its one of the purpose of this component ...

Thanks,

Loïc
