TOPIC: Use Template with new DB
#317
Use Template with new DB 15 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi,

Is there a way to setup a website template so that it creates a new mysql database instead of new tables in an existing one?

Thanks!

I have been working for 6 hours on the same topic. I have managed to create a new data base for the new domain by going through the installation process.

Once the installation process is done I can see that the database details are registered under "Sites". However, the issue is how do I now get the master website content into this database? At this point only the database is created an no data has been copied over. Note, I would not like to use the master database for this second site, just the conetent in a new database, so that the pages can be updated independently.

I think it would be a great help if you just could put some bullent points to uss as for what steps we need to get through to get the data over once the database from the installation is created.

Kind regards,

Chris

Another option I'd like an answer to:

If I was to create a slave site that did not include a multi-site template, can the sample data be changed so instead of creating the same stuff that normally comes with Joomla, it instead sets up the new slave site with custom joomla templates, components, modules, plugins, menus and content?

Thanks,

Bill W.

The actual version of JMS is not able to replicate website into another DB than the website that is used for the replication.
Concerning the second question, I don't understand it.

All I can tell you is that you can prepare a website that will be used for the replication and setup this website with pre-configured component, module, menu, plugin and content.
When this website is setup, you can replicate it with the JMS "website template" rules.
All the websites created from this website to be replicated will be included into the same DB.
I suggest you have a look in the video present in the tutorial step 13.

Hi Edwin,

I understand what you are saying. Is there not a way to setup an option, using a website template, to create a separate db instead of creating a table within the original db? I would prefer this for my use, if possible. If not, then perhaps this can be added to the features of your next release.

My second question is about creating a slave site without using a JMS "website template" and having edited the Joomla sample data prior to this so that I would have my own set of components, modules, menus, templates, etc instead of the standard ones that come with Joomla 1.5. Right now, this is the only way to create a new slave site using a new database. Understand?

Thanks for the quick response,
Bill W.

Concerning the first point, the replication only works in the same DB because we have not use a technology that consist to do a backu / restore procedure but using SQL queries to replicate the information. Perhaps in a future version we will implement a backup / restore mechanism to be able replicate website into another DB.

If you don't want to use the replication mechanism proposed with "websites template" you can use the fresh Joomla Installation procedure that let you have your own DB and use the Joomla sample data. If you are a Joomla expert, up to you to modify the sample data provided by Joomla with another content if you want. The installation directory is restored when JMS patches are installed. So you could try modify those sample data to initialise your website with different content.

If you want to proceed manually and do the backup / restore yourself, you could prepare a DB that you will restore somewhere else for another website and change manually the Joomla configuration file created for your slave site (using a fake DB ) to change it later with the DB connection of your restored DB. This will do the same except that you have to do the backup / restore manually and change the configuration.php file manually.
