cname instead of add-on domain

Question -- instead of creating add-on domain entries in cpanel, can i just cname the slave domains to the master domain?

YES you can create an alias in your DNS and use CName.
Don't forget to also add an entry in your hosting server to defined the new "ServerAliias" in aim to share the same document root directory.

The DNS CName is a method to define a synonym for a domain.
It does not define the physical place where is hosted your website files and folders.
This is the reason why you also have to defined the apache or other cpanel, ... configuration to describe the domain (or subdomain) root directory.
