Stupid question....Does article sharing have to be installed on the slave site to share articles ?

NO. You only install the "article sharing for JMS" in the slave site where you want to display (PULL) them. So if you want display in site1 and article that come from site2, you just have to install the "Article Sharing for JMS" in site1 (the place where you need to create a menu item to display the article). Site2 is access using the JMS core.
