What is a partially shared template folder? 12 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi Edwin,

I've been through the slides and I understand the use of the 'shared template' folder and 'full copy' template folder however I don't understand what is involved in the 'partially shared template folder'.

Can you please explain:

1) What exact folders are partially shared?
2) When should it be used instead of the 'shared' or 'full copied'?
3) What are the limitations with partially shared template folders?

Thanks and regards.

If you had watched the tutorial video 0.b slide 34, you can see that the folders created are different depending on
- Full shared (mean that the "/templates" directory is a link
- Full copy mean that the "/templates" directory is a physical copy
- Partially share mean that the "/templates" directory is a physical directory and that inside you have shared (linked) templates and other that are physical template.

As soon as you don't share the "/templates" directory then you have to later maintain the "synchronization" of the directory in case where you want to add new templates in the slave site.
Therefore when you perform a "copy" or a "partial sharing", you get a snapshot of the directory at the moment when the website were created. Up to you later to maintain yourself the "/templates" directory content.

Hi Edwin,

Thank you for your response. I think perhaps my question was not very clear.

I was asking what files/folders in the 'Partially Shared' templates directory are linked and what are copied? i.e. I'm only asking about the 'Partially Shared' directory.

Thanks and regards.

By default, when you use the "Partial template sharing", JMS create a physical "/templates" directory with inside all the subdirectories as Symbolic Link.

After YOU can decide to uninstall or install other templates that will become specific.

So this is YOU that decide which template become shared (Symbolic Link) or copy (Physical Directory).
At the begining, eveything is a Symbolic Link and this is you that cut the link to replace them by physical copy (or add new template).
