TOPIC: Site sharing same template
#11936
Site sharing same template 10 Years, 2 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello,

I bought the component and am looking for a way to do the following:

I would like set up 1 master site and 10 separate slave sites (different logins) but all sharing JUST the same template. I want to be able to go to the Template Manager for each new site and edit the template parameters so things can be slightly different for each separate site depending on what is entered in the template parameters. I don't want to have to install/update the template on each site individually.

Is this possible? If so, how?

The Joomla templates are located in the /templates directory.
By default, the rules present in the JMS Template menu assume that the /templates directory is shared between the websites.
Verify that the symbolic link is available. Otherwise, this will be a copy of the /templates directory that will be performed.

I will assume that you are using Joomla 2.5 or 3.2.
Most of the templates companies save the template parameters into the DB.
In this case, this mean that the configuration of the templates can be specific for each websites.

When editing the CSS or other templates files that are located on the disk, they are normally shared when the Symbolic Link is available.

When you have created the slave site, verify that the /templates directory is effectivelly a link and not a copy.
You can also verify the rules in the JMS Templates / Filea and folders tab.

So yes this is possible.

If you want to create a fresh slave site, use the JMS template rule like "freshSlaveXXXX"

I went in to edit the freshSlaveDomain template, and went to the Files and Folder tab, and went down to the templates directory, but it doesn't give me the option to to pick a "SL: symbolic link". The only options it gives me are:

special: Special copy
copy: Copy the folder or file
ignore: ignore folder of file
unzip: use a tar.gz file

So then how can I make it so the templates folder is a symbolic link back to the main site's template folder?

Also, is it possible to share the master site's modules to the slave site's?

For the "/images" and the "/templates" directories, the action is in general "special copy".

"Special copy" mean that in case where the "Symbolic Links" are allowed, then this is a "Symbolic Link". Otherwise this is a "Copy".

So if your environment autorize the symbolic link, you just need to select "special copy".

"Special Copy" also mean that additional parameters can be provided in the "Common tabs".
See the "Specific slave site folders".
